Bottle Feeding

Bottle Feeding

Preparing The Bottle

Make sure the bottle has been sterilized before giving it to your baby. You will want to make sure you place all of your new bottle nipples and rings in boiling water for about 5 minutes in order to make sure they are sterile. After the initial sterilization just running them through the dishwasher will be sufficient for sterilization.

Heating The Bottle

There are a couple of options for heating your baby’s bottle. You will want to make sure that every bottle is heated evenly and is not too hot a temperature, usually room temperature is recommended.

  • Run the bottle under hot sink water in order to warm it.
  • Fill a bowl with hot water and place the bottle in it to warm.
  • Use a bottle warmer to get the temperature just right.

You will want to shake the bottle in all cases to ensure that the contents are heated evenly throughout. One should also test the warmth by putting a drop or two on their wrist to ensure it isn’t too hot for the baby.

  • NEVER put your bottle in a microwave. Microwaves heat unevenly and leave hot pockets which can burn your baby.
  • NEVER re-heat or re-use a bottle in which the contents have already been heated.

How Much To Feed

Bottles

Feed your baby when they are hungry. Don’t try to force scheduled eating times, after a couple of months or so you might be able to establish an eating pattern. Do not feed your baby more than they want. Your baby will start out with small portions that will continue to grow in amount as your baby grows.
